Environment
Environmental performance is critical to the success of Gloucester Coal and the company conducts its operations to the highest environmental standards across all sites. Gloucester Coal's environmental management plans are focussed on minimising the impacts of mining and set high standards for water management and air quality and land rehabilitation.
In the Gloucester Basin our operations are moving towards integrating environmental models with real time monitoring and weather data to provide mine operators with information to better manage mining activity. In the lower Hunter, Donaldson Open Cut's rehabilitation program continues to attract attention for setting the highest standards, with the land being returned to a standard equal to, if not higher, than its pre-mining state.
Quarterly reports are presented to Community Consultative Committees and Government agencies, plus comprehensive Annual Environmental Management Reports are also compiled and submitted.
Duralie
The core environmental issues at the Duralie operation are efficient handling, storage and use of both mine water, management of potentially acid forming (PAF) waste rock and operational noise.
In the last twelve months, Gloucester Coal has prepared a revised noise reduction plan, commenced construction of an additional storage dam (Auxiliary Dam 2) and rehabilitated six hectares of waste rock emplacement.
Stratford
Stratford Mine continues to improve its environmental performance with the introduction of 24/7 noise monitoring and a new pivot irrigation system to improve the quality of rehabilitated land.
The mine is one of nine NSW mines selected to work with the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage to improve air quality through a number dust mitigation measures like preventing wind erosion from exposed areas, improved dust suppression on haul roads and strict monitoring around blasting.
Donaldson Operations
The exceptionally high standard of rehabilitation undertaken at the Donaldson Open Cut Coal Mine has set a new benchmark for best practice rehabilitation throughout the Hunter Valley.
To date the mine has revegetated over 120 hectares and in 2011 and completed 10 years of Flora Fauna Monitoring in the Bushland Conservation area.
